WNBL pre season game tonight 7.30pm

WNBL pre season game is being hosted tonight by Sunbury Basketball Association at 7.30pm

COST: $10 adults / $5 children

The Deakin Melbourne Boomers will only have a few training sessions under their belt when they hit the court this Saturday night at Sunbury, but they will look to suit-up most of their 15-player roster.

Waiting for them at the aptly named Hangar (home of the Sunbury Jets) will be an Invitational Team led by Kennedy Kereama, fresh off a Big V State Championship Women title, and a number of very familiar players.

A huge crowd is expected to turn out for the 7:30pm tip-off on Saturday night, especially in anticipation of seeing Liz Cambage in Boomers colours for the first time this season.

“We’re really looking forward to getting out on court for the first time this season, the players are ready to go,” said Boomers Coach Guy Molloy.

“We will just about have a full squad to select from, which will be good for the crowd to come along and see.”

Boomers GM Justin Nelson confirmed that the team will be on court after the game to meet all the fans as per their normal ritual after every WNBL contest.

“That’s who we are, it’s what we do,” said Nelson about the after-game signing and photo session, adding “The players are looking forward to meeting everyone in Sunbury.”

The Invitation Team will feature a number of recognised players, including former WNBL star Samantha Richards and leading Big V imports Ariel Thomas and Orla O’Rielly.

“Kennedy has put together a good team, we expect a tough hit-out to get our official pre-season underway,” said Molloy.

Others expected to play for the Invitational Team include Monique Stevens, Josie Stockill, Chelsea Burns, Lucy Dawson, Lauren Pearce and Lilly Scanlon.

The finals are here!

To players, parents, coaches and club members and spectators,

It is pleasing that our club is heavily represented in the current finals series. Importantly, apart from participation and success on court, it is essential that everybody associated with our club, (players, spectators, coaches, parents, friends, relatives and siblings) always exhibit respectful and sporting behaviour without exception.

Understandably, the level of anxiety in finals matches increases, which can potentially lead to emotions and behaviours running a bit beyond the norm. This was quite noticeable at all 3 stadiums throughout Saturday afternoon, with some unsavoury behaviours (on and off court) attracting the attention of club officials and SBA supervisors.

For the remainder of the finals series please be mindful of who we are representing and what examples we are setting for our kids and others. We all know right from wrong.

Thanks and regards

Family Day/Presentation Day with our Annual General Meeting (AGM)

With the end of the 2017 Winter season nearly completed and the 2017/18 summer season to begin in term 4, I would like to take this opportunity to thank our junior and senior players whom have represented the basketball club over the past 12 months and best of luck to those of you entering finals over the next couple of weeks.

We are having a Family Day/Presentation Day with our Annual General Meeting (AGM) this year on Sunday the 17th September 2017, from Midday to 3pm at Lakeside Stadium, Salesian College, Rupertswood.

All committee positions are up for election so if you would like to nominate for a position or would like to know more about the committee, please contact David Tweedly on 0418 999 115 or David Mott on 0413 427 904 or speak to Doug or Mandy Bell, Greg Purcell, Julie McSwiggan, Neale Fleming, Rachel Travers, Sharon Dale or Tammie Marriott.

Merchandise will be on display and available for ordering.

Can I just remind you that the scorers are responsible for the score sheet and not the referees as I’m getting complaints from coaches and parents alike that they are losing 2-3 mins of game time at the start of their game. I thank for your co-operation.

Thank you

David Tweedly

3 x 3 Basketball Camp – 4th & 5th July 2017

Did you know that 3×3 basketball has just been announced last week as being included in the 2020 Olympics!? Pretty cool hey!

The Sunbury Basketball Association are always looking at ways to offer more opportunities to players and with the shift in trend to 3×3 competitions and tournaments popping up everywhere, they have made a cautious effort to create an introductory camp and tournament for our kids to take part in.

Spend 2 days with FIBA National 3×3 player Orla O’Reilly and the Big V State Champ Women. Each player will have fun and learn the fundamentals of 3×3 basketball and play in a mini tournament!

Also if you have any parents or coaches want to take part, we welcome them too!

Payment of 2017 Winter Season fees

Hello and welcome to the 2017 Winter Season.

Firstly I’d like to welcome you all back and welcome to all new players who will be representing Rupertswood for the first time this season.

For the past four seasons your fees have been $150 per season. Part of your fees go towards the team sheets every week. In the Winter season of 2016 there was a price increase on the team sheet which the club covered through the chocolate drive. Last season (2016/17 Summer season) the club wore the extra cost for the team sheet and once again we will wear the extra cost for this season (2017 Winter season).

Next season (2017/18 Summer season) the club will increase your fees to $160 per season to cover any additional costs. Also from next season the Rupertswood Basketball Club will enforce a NO PAY NO PLAY policy. What this means is that your fees for summer 2017/18 season your fees will need to be paid upfront prior to the beginning of that season.

If you are experiencing financial difficulties or hardship you need to contact our treasurer Mandy Bell or myself.

Best of luck for the season ahead and I look forward to seeing you all strive for your best.

Clubs expectations of players and parents

CLUBS EXPECTATIONS OF PLAYERS AND PARENTS

The Rupertswood Basketball Club would like to outline some expectations for both players and parents as to what is expected from you after a few issues over past few seasons and in moving forward to make Rupertswood a better club for all to enjoy:

  • We expect both players and parents to abide by the codes of conduct which can be found HERE on our website and when you have the opportunity please have a read.
  • Don’t approach the coach during a game and only approach your coach after the game in a positive manner, if you have concerns with your coach please speak to your team manager or speak to a committee person.
  • Be supportive of your coach and follow their instructions, not every coach is the next NBA coach but they volunteer their time every week to help you to not only improve your game skills but your personal skills as well and hopefully make you into a well-rounded human being.
  • Be supportive of your fellow players regardless of ability.
  • We expect you to bring enthusiasm to training and games.
  • A great attitude at all times
  • Teamwork is a must, there is no ‘I’ in team.
  • Leadership from everybody
  • Have fun and enjoy basketball – it’s not always about winning but about how you conduct yourselves and show sportsmanship.
  • Finally you’re not only representing Rupo Basketball and the SBA but you’re representing yourself and your family.

Summer 2017 Season Grand Finals

As the Summer season for 2017 comes to an end, we need to congratulate nine teams that made it through to the Grand Final! Nine teams representing Rupo Sharks, the most teams we’ve ever had represented in grand finals at once! What an amazing effort to all the players, coaches, team managers, family members and supporters! Fantastic efforts from everyone. We wouldn’t have such an amazing community club without all your tireless effort and support.

Good luck to the following nine sides as they head into their Grand Final matches. Know that everyone will be supporting you and hoping you bring home the winners trophy:

  • 12C boys (Lockie Wilkes)
  • 12C girls (Phil Mifsud)
  • 14B girls (Louise Martino)
  • 14C girls (Georgia Watson
  • 16B boys (Nathan D’Amato)
  • 16C girls (David Tweedly)
  • 19A boys (Mandy Bell)
  • 19B boys (Mark Harris)
  • 19C girls (David Tweedly) * best of 3 series

Hope to see everyone back soon ready to play in the upcoming Winter comp after Easter.
